Avocado here to save the day!

Avocado is another one of these wonder products that everyone says you should have and most of us blindly follow along but I’m going to give you the low down on what’s so great about them so you can decide whether you want or need them in your diet or not. Here we go….

Avocado

The avocado is native to Mexico and central America and is fortunately available all year round so you don’t need to plan your annual meal plan around them! As with a lot of “wonder products” they are best used raw rather than cooked otherwise you end up losing some of their amazing qualities.

Avocados are high in fat (don’t panic!) it’s high in the healthy monounsaturated fat which are vital for weight loss. The oelic acid in them is perfect for improving the skin (by eating them¬†or just applying it to your skin in a nice homemade face mask!).

They are full of antioxidants thereby protecting your body’s cells from free radical damage and reduces the signs of ageing! Woo hoo!! This list keeps getting better and better!!

Avocados have tons of vitamins such as B & K which means it will improve your circulation, boost immunity, moisturises your skin and tastes amazing whilst your doing it ūüôā It’s got a creamy flavour to it so it feels like you’re eating some rich and delicious and terribly naughty! And with vitamins here comes the minerals; manganese, copper, magnesium and potassium.

It’s great at reducing ¬†the risk of heart disease because it reduces levels of LDL cholesterol and increases the HDL cholesterol which is protective of the cardiovascular system.

Finally the almighty avocado has essential omega 9 fat acids. What’s great about this? Well it means that it will help with absorbing the vitamins and antioxidants¬†of the other food you’re eating with it! So if you eat avocados with nice leafy salads and some butternut squash you will be absorbing all the right stuff and the lbs will drop off of you!

So how should you eat avocados? Here’s some yummy recipes that might help you out:

Hair Washing Perils!

When I first started taking my exercising seriously and doing it every day the ONE thing that really irritated me was having to wash my hair every day too. All that sweating meant that even dry shampoo wouldn’t tide me over and was wreaking havoc on my tresses! I’ve been searching high and low for the perfect shampoo and conditioner and now I’ve definitely found it and wanted to share this good news with all of you!!

As someone blessed with thick hair it is prone to frizzing so I hate having to blow dry it and doing that on a daily basis just wasn’t working so I popped to the shops and purchased L’Oreal Ever Sleek and Ever Riche combo for dry overworked hair.

L'Oreal Shampoo

This range has no sulphates so it means that I am doing minimal damage to my hair because sulphates are basically detergents used in cleaning products, it strips the colour for your hair and isn’t really needed in the shampoo, it’s only added to make it foam more so it makes you feel like you’re getting a good lather but it’s actually doing more damage than good.

This shampoo and conditioner have been a god send! I apply the shampoo at the roots and all over the scalp and then I only condition my hair from the nape of my neck down to the tips. Then I either wrap it in a towel and let it dry naturally or I will do 2 dutch braids in pigtails to let it dry overnight and then I wake up with lustrous frizz free beachy curls! I couldn’t recommend this enough and wouldn’t used anything else!

Maca Packa Powa

I had to think carefully about posting this but figured it’s up to individuals how they use this information. With maca comes great responsibility!

Maca powder also known as Peruvian ginseng is a supplement that can be used for boosting energy. It was used by Inca warriors before battle to help with energy, endurance and stamina. So if you want to workout like a warrior then this is the thing for you!! It’s also been recommended for boosting libido, improving fertility, balancing hormones and boosting immunity. Now whilst I am obviously not your GP before I go any further it has also been suggested that because of the improved fertility and hormone balancing property if you take too much then it could have an affect on your birth control methods which is why I am debating on whether or not to use it at the moment!

Anyway back to the maca powder properties. As I mentioned above it balances hormones which is great for those people who suffer from migraines. And it is a natural fix rather than taking tablets. It is also good for improving skin complaints such as acne. But again if you overload on it and take more than the recommended dosage then it will have the reverse effect so there’s a little bit of science here for getting it right for your body.

MACA POWDER

This is a paleo product so it’s on my approved list! It is better in it’s non-cooked form but you can mix it in with flour when baking if you like. The best way to consume maca powder is to pop it in a smoothie! Here are some ideas:

  • Ultimate Chocolate Paleo Thick Shake –¬†http://paleofoodies.com.au/2013/10/my-favourite-paleo-smoothies/
  • Green Kale Smoothie –¬†http://paleogrubs.com/green-smoothie-with-kale

Are you Bulletproof?

Everyone in the paleo community seems to buzzing about the Bulletproof Coffee. This one is a pretty easy choice for me because I don’t like the taste of coffee at all but still felt it was something worth looking in to!

So what is the bulletproof coffee? Well it’s basically an antioxidant rich coffee, blended with grass-fed butter and a bit of oil (coconut oil can be used).

Why would you want to drink it? It sounds like the fattiest thing ever and it is but it’s good fats, it has all the benefits of healthy milk fat without the damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream,¬†so you don’t need to worry too much about it as long as you bear in mind that the 200 – 300 calories used in this drink will need to be removed from elsewhere within your diet, and it can be substituted for your actual breakfast if you want. Anyway, the reason WHY you would drink this for breakfast is quite simply because it will train¬†your body to¬†burn fat for energy all day long and it helps to keep your energy levels stabilised for around 6 hours.

Bulletproof Coffee

The more I look into this the more I actually want to try it despite my not liking the taste of coffee! I love the smell and want to like it and am hoping a couple of scoops of kerrygold butter will be a miracle worker and make me like coffee! I’ll let you know how I get on with that!

Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is a great staple for the paleo diet. What’s so great about it? Well I’ll tell you; it’s a naturally gluten-free alternative to wheat, it has a high percentage of high dietary fibre which means that it will help to make you feel fuller for longer, and in turn will help aid weight loss.

One good thing to remember with coconut flour is that YES you can use it in any recipe and substitute it for any other flour. However, what you need to remember is that because it doesn’t have any gluten it doesn’t bind as well as wheat flour. So you should add 1 egg per one ounce of coconut flour because the egg will take the place of the gluten and will help to bind the flour. Happy baking!!

Teff Luck Quinoa – There’s a New Super Product in Town!

Before I started trying to eat a bit healthier I had NEVER in my life heard of quinoa, as soon as I started my mission to eat clean this miracle product seemed to be cropping up all over the place. But now I am a girl in the know and the latest craze and product literally on everyone’s lips is teff.

When I say it’s taken the place of quinoa I solely mean in popularity and it’s demand not in the actual uses. The way you would cook with these are totally different so there’s still room for both in my cupboard.

So what’s so great about this Ethiopian grown teff? Firstly it’s a source rich in calcium, iron and protein. Secondly and possibly one of the best selling points is that it is also free of gluten! And finally it’s an excellent source of essential amino acids. So what’s not to love about this super product loved by super celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham?!

How should you use it? Teff flour can be used as a substitute for wheat flour in all scenarios. It’s traditionally used in the injera flatbread but it can also be used in other breads, pancakes, dry fry it to make a crispy topping for vegetables, soups or stews. Visit http://www.teffco.com/recipes for some ideas to get you started.

Is it considered clean eating? YES!!!

Is it considered paleo or primal? Unfortunately not ūüôĀ but as described in Mark’s Daily Apple it is considered one of the “better” grains out there so if you’re going to have something on the naughty list this isn’t the worst choice to go with!¬†http://www.marksdailyapple.com/fat-triggers-marijuana-like-chemicals-another-anti-meat-report-and-teff/#axzz31cwrHwwG

The only problem is with these on trend yet not the norm products is they come with a hefty price tag most of the time, so I am still trying to find somewhere that sells it at a price I don’t mind paying and without having to pay a hefty P&P fee! As soon as I’ve got my hands on some I will be trying some recipes and updating you on my finds!

coconut oil

It’s also really important to remember that there is no such thing as a miracle product, whilst it does promote and aid all of the above (in particular the medical conditions) this is alongside other treatments prescribed by your doctor, and by living a healthy and active lifestyle. The coconut oil is a great product with a million and one uses which is why it’s on my wonder product list, it’s not magic!
